Steel frame buildings have come a long way since the days of steel girders welded together.
Today companies typically supply just one of the two popular solutions. Here at 3CB we are able to
bring all the benefits of both methods to provide the optimum project solution.
Cold rolled frames which are constructed from pre-galvanised, thick, strip which is rolled to form 'C' section channels which are then in turn punched and bolted together with various brackets to form the main frames of the building which in turn are typically bolted onto the surface of the slab or foundations. The frames are light and strong. Such a solution works for buildings up to about 6m eaves height and 20m clear span.
Cold Rolled Advantages:
>> Fast assembly
>> Economic design & construction costs
>> Shorter lead time
>> Self build opportunity
Hot rolled steel buildings which utilise heavy sections of rolled steel formed into either 'C', 'H' or 'I' sections which are cut and welded to form the frames of the building. These are typically then cast into the foundations or have very large bolts cast into the foundations to bolt the frames to. These are much heavier frames that are more costly on all fronts but are used for larger buildings.
Hot Rolled Advantages:
>> Increased spans for larger buildings
>> Increased load bearing benefits
3CB is unusual in that it offers both solutions since each solution has its specific uses, and can also integrate both solutions into one building if required thus bringing a huge range of benefits to a project.
3CB were asked to provide a full turnkey service (from planning and demolition right through to the sophisticated electrics & alarm system) for an aviation museum in the South of England. The planning constraints meant that the new building could only occupy a volume 10% higher than the previous elderly building that was to be demolished. Much of the museum content is low level storage/exhibition material whilst one or two aircraft had high tail fins.
So 3CB adopted a combined solution by providing hot rolled steel section frames at the high end - carrying the heavy folding doors etc, and their cold rolled solution for the remainder of the building. A delighted client has now opened the new museum to the general public and is hoping to work with 3CB in the future as funds permit further expansion of their facilities.
Benefits of Combination Construction:
>> Huge cost benefits
>> Reduced framing and foundation costs
>> Structural integrity
>> Built to suit individual needs
