Western Model Railway Society
Acton's model railway enthusiasts are the proud owners of a new clubhouse thanks to a project undertaken by Three Counties Buildings
As it approached its 73rd year, The Western Model Railway Society were eager to redevelop their clubhouse to provide its members with a more modern environment. After searching for the right company to cater for a cause so close to their member's hearts they decided Three Counties Buildings could offer a level of service unrivalled in the steel buildings sector.
When asked to design the society’s clubhouse, Three Counties Buildings provided the Western Model Railway Society with detailed drawings to support their planning application, which was finally granted by Ealing's Planning department in November 2007.
Having connections with model railway enthusiasts on the continent the WMRS were keen to impress with a bespoke steel framed building clubhouse to showcase their personally crafted dioramas. Three Counties Buildings offered the Western Model Railway Society the 'turnkey' package including groundworks and erection of their steel building and fit out with a mezzanine floor.
The project commenced in late September with the old clubhouse being demolished ready for Three Counties Building's team of qualified erectors to move in on site and prepare the groundworks.
The Western Model Railway Society were incredibly grateful to David Kevan, a much missed member for leaving the society funding to bring the clubhouse into the new century. Sadly, in 2007, the society lost one of its beloved members, Ian McKendrick, and Three Counties Buildings halted the laying of the groundworks slab in order for his ashes to be dispersed amongst the foundations in tribute to the much loved model railway enthusiast.
Three Counties Buildings' project management team needed to be precise with scheduling due to the site being situated in such close proximity to the national rail network line in Acton, London. The Great Western main line had to be closed for several nights in order to accommodate the 3CB team of erectors and any margin of error would set the building back another month due to regulations.
The team at Three Counties Buildings completed phase two on the 17th October 2008. On the day Stan Simmons, the WMRS President, was on hand to receive the keys from Three Counties Buildings Ltd Contracts Manager. Stan was hugely grateful to see the projects completion and thanked Ron Bailes and the rest of the members for their hard work. He said: "This building has been a long time coming and it is good to see it here at last."
