According to a report on BusinessGreen.com, a team of Welsh scientists from Swansea University have come up with a substance that can applied directly onto steel before it is used in the construction of steel buildings around the world. The scientists developed a paint like liquid that can capture solar energy and it is now hoped that it can be utilised in new steel buildings in order to useable energy from their external surfaces. According to the report on BusinessGreen.com, the breakthrough discovery was made by an engineering doctorate who was studying the way in which sunlight degrades paint and found that he could create a substance that actually harnessing the energy instead. This new find is expected to big business when it comes to steel buildings as many companies are seeking ways to become more environmentally friendly.

There does certainly appear to be room for this innovative solar power substance in the construction and there is millions of square metres of cladding applied to steel buildings each year and the substance could be use to make these structures considerably more environmentally friendly. Speaking to BusinessGreen.com, one of the researchers behind the project, Dr Dave Worsley, stated, “If steel buildings were treated with the photovoltaic material, and assuming a conservative five per cent energy conversion rate, then we could be looking at generating 4,500Gw of electricity through the solar cells annually. That's the equivalent output of roughly 50 wind farms.”
