According to a report in the Daily Mail, the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl, which has been leaking radiation since the meltdown in 1986, was recently covered with a range of steel buildings predominantly consisting of a giant steel plate that was specifically designed to help prevent radiation leaks from the reactor core which exploded over two decades ago. Steel buildings or structures are ideally suited to such endeavours as they are extremely durable and weather well which is of crucial importance when the health and safety implications of this project are taken into consideration.
Steel Buildings – Radiation Concern
Almost immediately after the reactor at Chernobyl exploded in 1986, a concrete sarcophagus was constructed around the reactor in order to try and minimise the radiation being released into the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, however, this concrete tomb has weathered badly and has been releasing radiation for the best part of a decade. According to the report in the Daily Mail, steel buildings were recently devised to encase the hastily erected concrete construction in attempt to reduce the radioactive emissions. Speaking to assembled journalists at the unveiling of the steel buildings designed to make Chernobyl safe, Ukrainian President, Viktor Yushchenko, stated, “I am convinced that today, possibly for the first time, we can frankly tell the national and international community that the answer to the problem of sheltering the Chernobyl nuclear plant was found today.”
Steel Buildings – A Large Undertaking
According to the report in the Daily Mail, the steel buildings constructed around the potentially dangerous Chernobyl site was a large, not to mention expensive, undertaking. Reports suggest that the steel plate and steel buildings built around the site cost in excess of $1 billion but it was hoped that it would bring the curtain down on thoughts that Chernobyl’s reactor still posed a radioactive health threat to those in the region and surrounding areas. Steel buildings are being increasingly utilised in all manner of buildings since they have excellent properties that are prized in the building industry and just recently, Wembley and Heathrow T5 are just a couple of the more famous steel buildings that completed construction.
